Many parents ask:
What can I do at home to help my child become a better reader?
Below are some of the reading strategies that the first grade teachers use while reading in school.
You can easily use the same strategies at home.

Before Reading:

Take a picture walk
Predict: what is this story about?

During Reading:
Touch the print as you read
If you get stuck on a word:
-look at the pictures for clues
-skip the word, finish the sentence
then go back and try again
    -find chunks you know
    -look for little words
    -blend the sounds together
    Try the word and think:
    -Does it make sense?
    -Does it look right?
    -Does it sound right?

    After Reading:
          Talk about what you read:
         -Who were the characters?
-Where did the story take place?
    -What happened in the story?
-Did you like the story? Why or why not?
